Esta obra, Henoc e as origens de Qumran: nova luz sobre uma conexão esquecida, é resultado de um dos seminários sobre a literatura henóquica, The Enoch Seminar. O primeiro seminário aconteceu em Florença, Itália, de 19 a 23 de junho de 2001. O resultado foi publicado no livro BOCCACCINI, G.(ed.) The Origins of Enochic Judaism. Turin: Zamorani, 2002, com ensaios de Randal A. Argall, Andreas Bedenbender, Gabriele Boccaccini, James H. Charlesworth, John J. Collins, J. Harold Ellens, Mark Elliott, Esther Eshel, Hanan Eshel, Florentino García Martínez, Ithamar Gruenwald, Martha Himmelfarb, Michael A. Knibb, Helge S. Kvanvig, Luca Mazzinghi, Pierluigi Piovanelli, Paolo Sacchi, Brian Schmidt, Loren T. Stuckenbruck, David W. Suter, Eibert J.C. Tigchelaar, Benjamin G. Wright III, Adela Yarbro Collins. O segundo seminário foi realizado em Veneza, Itália, de 1 a 4 de julho de 2003. O resultado é este volume, Enoch and Qumran Origins: New Light on a Forgotten Connection, editado por Boccaccini, que coordena o grupo. O terceiro seminário aconteceu em Camaldoli, Arezzo, Itália, de 6 a 10 de junho de 2005 e discutiu o tema The Parables of Enoch and the Messiah Son of Man. O livro, editado por Boccaccini, saiu em julho de 2007, com o título de: Enoch and the Messiah Son of Man: Revisiting the Book of Parables. O quarto seminário acontecerá em Camaldoli-Arezzo, Ravenna, Itália, de 8 a 12 de julho de 2007 e o tema será Enoch and the Mosaic Torah: The Evidence of Jubilees. O quinto seminário já está previsto para 2009, e tratará do tema The Legacy of Enochic Judaism. O que é o Enoch Seminar? É um empreendimento conjunto do Departamento de Estudos do Oriente Médio da Universidade de Michigan, do Centro Frankel para Estudos Judaicos e do Centro Michigan para Estudos do Cristianismo Primitivo. Na página 4 deste livro é descrita do seguinte modo a plataforma do seminário: The contemporary research in 1 Enoch is a collective enterprise that involves scholars from different countries and different schools. Este livro tem, assim, a colaboração de 47 pesquisadores de 11 países: William Adler,
Matthias Albani, Jeff S. Anderson, Albert I. Baumgarten, Andreas Bedenbender, Stefan Beyerle,
Gabriele Boccaccini, James H. Do que trata o livro? Segundo a apresentação na página da editora Eerdmans, este é o primeiro e mais completo exame das complexas e esquecidas relações existentes entre a comunidade de Qumran e o grupo judaico que produziu a literatura pseudepígrafa de Henoc. Os ensaístas demonstram que as raízes da comunidade de Qumran devem ser buscadas na tradição do grupo henóquico muito mais do que no sacerdócio de Jerusalém. A introdução é de Gabriele Boccacini e a conclusão de James Charlesworth. As cinco partes do livro examinam, sob diferentes ângulos, as hipóteses de 5 eminentes pesquisadores da área: John J. Collins (Dream Visions and Daniel), James C. VanderKam (Enoch and Jubilees), George W. E. Nickelsburg (The Apocalypses of Weeks), Florentino García Martínez (The Groningen Hypothesis Revisited) e Gabriele Boccaccini (The Enochic-Essene Hypothesis Revisited). No final de cada parte o autor da respectiva hipótese responde às questões levantadas. Resenhando o livro para a Review of Biblical Literature, em 22 de janeiro de 2006, Thomas J. Kraus, de Hilpoltstein, Alemanha, entusiasmado com a profundidade do estudo diz o seguinte: Of course, it is impossible to review sixty-one papers, notes, responses, discussions, and short essays, to mention only a few examples of the various contributions to
this volume. Moreover, that would make no sense, since the volume is intended to reproduce how the members of the Enoch Seminar and the participants of the
meeting worked on and discussed the theses presented and defended by some of them. Having
the specialists on Enoch all together in one place and in one volume, a reviewer does not necessarily need to review or repeat their positions and even the course of discussion visible in so many short papers. Rather, the structure of the
volume, the progress of the discussion, the responses of those whose theses were reflected upon, and the introductory chapter by Gabriele Boccaccini and the
concluding one by James H. Charlesworth altogether make this volume outstandingly attractive. Even if the words
"“gripping”" and "“thrilling”" may sound hyperbolic here,
I do not know any better, in spite of the fact that I do not recall applying terms such as these to an academic book, above all one that consists of many individual
contributions (...) This volume is of highest quality and a pleasure to read. This is
state of-the-art and at the same time first-class research at its best (...) Whoever
wants an introduction into the fascinating area of Enoch studies will find here the best scholars available offering a vivid, gripping, and sometimes even thrilling debate
on various aspects. This volume might even serve as a role model of how academic discussions should be led.
