Magdalene.org

Magdalene.org has been online since 1998, exploring the various perspectives on Mary Magdalene that exist. In April, 2005 the site was re-launched after taking into consideration the kinds of information people have been looking for post-Da Vinci Code and restructured accordingly. Here you find answers to some of your questions about Mary Magdalene. By Lesa Bellevie, USA.

Mary Magdalene in Recent Literature

A critical review of the recent literature about Mary Magdalene by Birger A. Pearson, an SBL member and Professor Emeritus of Religious Studies, University of California, Santa Barbara. The books reviewed are: The Da Vinci Code: A Novel. By Dan Brown. New York: Doubleday, 2003. pp. 454; The Woman Jesus Loved: Mary Magdalene in the Nag Hammadi Library and Related Documents. By Antti Marjanen. NHMS 40. Leiden: Brill, 1996. pp. ix + 261; Mary Magdalene: Beyond the Myth. By Esther de Boer, translated by John Bowden. Harrisburg: Trinity Press International, 1997. pp. xi + 147; The Resurrection of Mary Magdalene: Legends, Apocrypha, and the Christian Testament. By Jane Schaberg. New York: Continuum, 2002. pp. 379; Mary Magdalene, the First Apostle: The Struggle for Authority. By Ann Graham Brock. HTS 51. Cambridge: Harvard University Press, 2003. pp. xviii + 235. "In her concluding chapter, Brock expresses the hope that the study of the historical evidence will foster greater appreciation of Mary Magdalene's role as 'the first apostle' (p. 175). Her book, as well as the others reviewed here, shows that this process is now well under way", says Birger A. Pearson.

Noncanonical Literature

Do Wesley Center Online, Northwest Nazarene University, Nampa, Idaho, USA.

Apocryphal and pseudepigraphal literature was apparently intended either to supplement or supplant existing canonical literature. Many of the apocryphal gospels offer guesses as to what occurred during the so-called "missing years" of Jesus' life - during his childhood or after his resurrection. Others attempt to provide support for later theological convictions -- both orthodox and heretical. Whether the information found in the apocryphal literature is factually correct or not is not necessarily important. These documents give interpreters valuable insight into what some Jews and Christians believed in various places at different times. Here you find the main Jewish and Christian apocryphal and pseudepigraphal texts, Fathers of the Church and Gnostic literature of Nag Hammadi, Egypt. An aid to students and scholars in biblical interpretation including introductions and summaries of many noncanonical works. By the Wesley Center Online, Northwest Nazarene University, Nampa, Idaho.

OCP - The Online Critical Pseudepigrapha

For some time it has been evident that scholars of early Judaism and early Christianity need better access to the texts of the Pseudepigrapha in their original (or extant) languages and with a critical apparatus. In many cases critical editions are prohibitively expensive or out of print, and scholars without access to a large library have been hard pressed to find them. The Online Critical Pseudepigrapha is intended to address this problem by publishing on-line, free-access critical texts of the Pseudepigrapha which are up-to-date and academically rigorous. Sponsor: King's University College, at The University of Western Ontario, Canada.

The Gospel of Thomas

The Gospel of Thomas is a collection of sayings attributed to Jesus of Nazareth. Unless it is merely a collection of materials that mainly were drawn out of the Biblical gospels, as seems unlikely for most if not all of Thomas' sayings, then Thomas is the most important historical source for knowledge of Jesus of Nazareth that exists outside of the Bible. It is the most significant manuscript ever found for the history of earliest Christianity. The site is maintained by Stevan Davies.
